Phonics & Reading

To introduce  children to phonics in a way which supports their understanding and development we have, this year,  introduced the  Read, Write Inc scheme across Early Years and Key Stage 1.   This follows the successful introduction of RWI Spelling strategies across KS2 last year.  Children from Nursery start working on developing their understanding of phonics using Read, Write Inc.  Once we have established a starting point the children across EYFS , KS1  and KS2 (where appropriate) split into groups and work daily with other children at the same Phase.  Teaching Assistants and Teachers have been trained to deliver this to all groups and children are already confidently Fred talking.

More details of the whole Read Write Inc.,  scheme developed by Ruth Miskin, is available by clicking here    It provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy and is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools.  The scheme is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the higher expectations of the National Curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child’s progress and prepare them for the 2016 National Curriculum Tests.

All children in Year 1 take part in the Goverment Year 1 Phonics test and those who do not attain the required score re-enter in Year 2.

Our main reading scheme is now the Read, Write Inc scheme but this is supplemented by Oxford Reading Tree books as we feel appropriate.
